Go Ahead, Make Mistakes!

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, In : Parenting
Mistakes. They’re a beautiful mess! To be clear, I’m talking about the kind of mistakes that are life-affirming, not life-altering. We don’t like to make them, yet mistakes are a boundless resource of opportunity and insight. I sometimes wonder if our children are missing out on this. I often find my teenage daughter vacillating between obsessing over her G.P.A. and reminding herself to focus on the process, not the product, of learning. I often remind her that mistakes (i.e., missed ex...

Are you Pushing the 'Break' Out of Your Child's Summer?

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, In : Parenting

Remember when summer break used to mean riding bikes, playing in the park, going swimming at the neighborhood pool, and sitting outside laughing with your friends while enjoying a cool sweet treat? After nine months of bell schedules, bus rides, tests, and endless homework, you could look forward to some down time. Time to just relax, be a kid and have fun. Sometimes, a family vacay was even thrown into the mix when it was affordable. But even if you didn’t get to go away to grandma’s or ...

Mother Wit Monday: I Can Show You Better Than I Can Tell You

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Monday, June 23, 2014, In : Parenting
Today, I was reminded of a remark I would often hear from my parents (mostly when I was in trouble).

"I can show you better than I can tell you!"

Did you ever get threatened with that one? Technically, it was one of the old standbys that parents would use to help you get whatever point they were trying to drive home. Trust me, you didn't want to get to that point though!

But let's take a different spin on it. It's a known fact that our children absorb more of what we do than what we say. So in ...

Mother Wit Monday: Wishing Won't Make It So

Hi There!

Welcome back for more Mother Wit Monday. I was thinking about the myriad of wise old sayings I received from my mother, grandmother, and aunts as I was growing up, and it was a challenge choosing which one to go with for today. But I think I've put my finger on a winner!

You know, it's common to hear the words, "I wish..." come out of the mouths of of young people and adults alike.

"I wish I was a millionaire."

"I wish I could drive a car like that."

"I wish I c...

Mother Wit Monday: Show Me Who You Run With

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Monday, January 27, 2014, In : Parenting
Welcome to the first of many installments of something I like to call Mother Wit Monday.

Mother wit, simply defined, is good old practical wisdom and common sense. The kind we used to get from our mothers, aunts, grandmothers and the little old neighbor lady who used to let us rake the leaves up in her yard for a quarter. Remember?

Today's generation doesn't have as much exposure to these pearls of wisdom as we did, and I think it's time we do something about that. So, each Monday, a selected ...

What Is Mamaversity?

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Sunday, July 14, 2013, In : Introduction

Mamaversity
is a network of concerned mothers (I like to call us "momfessors") and community professionals who collaborate by pooling our gifts, talents, skills, and life experiences together to provide academic/life coaching. Our intent is to impart the amazement, desire, joy, and value of life-long learning back into our middle and high school children, motivating them to get actively engaged and inspired in the learning process, with the end result being students who feel empowered and cap...

About Me

Tracy Dennis I'm the mother of three of the most delightful kids ever to grace this earth! I know. I'm biased, but that's allowed :) I love learning and I want my kids to love it too - for life! That's why I'm documenting our ups, downs, highs, and lows as we plot a new educational path filled with wonder, relevance, and genuine growth. Hopefully, along the way we'll inspire others to do the same.
