Go Ahead, Make Mistakes!

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, In : Parenting
Mistakes. They’re a beautiful mess! To be clear, I’m talking about the kind of mistakes that are life-affirming, not life-altering. We don’t like to make them, yet mistakes are a boundless resource of opportunity and insight. I sometimes wonder if our children are missing out on this. I often find my teenage daughter vacillating between obsessing over her G.P.A. and reminding herself to focus on the process, not the product, of learning. I often remind her that mistakes (i.e., missed ex...

Have We Made Our Kids Too Afraid to Think?

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, In : Parenting
I was recently watching an episode of "Brain Games," this very cool show on the National Geographic Network. They brought out some very enlightening points about the human tendency to conform as opposed to taking risks. I know that most of us what like to believe that we are actually brave, trailblazing mavericks. But most times, what's closer to the truth is that while we know that we actually should be, we usually not, at least not when it counts. Why is that? I believe it's because of our ...

Mother Wit Monday: I Can Show You Better Than I Can Tell You

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Monday, June 23, 2014, In : Parenting
Today, I was reminded of a remark I would often hear from my parents (mostly when I was in trouble).

"I can show you better than I can tell you!"

Did you ever get threatened with that one? Technically, it was one of the old standbys that parents would use to help you get whatever point they were trying to drive home. Trust me, you didn't want to get to that point though!

But let's take a different spin on it. It's a known fact that our children absorb more of what we do than what we say. So in ...

The Case for Creativity

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Thursday, May 22, 2014, In : Progress
A few years ago, just when new curriculum reforms in our state were gaining momentum, my daughter's teacher said something to me that I'll never forget. She was the kind of teacher who was not only a great instructor, but she was also a great facilitator because she loved to learn along with her students. But as standardized testing and academic performance intensified in priority, she and many of her peers became understandably disturbed. She said to me, "I wish I could spend more time doing...

Mamaversity Goes Public!

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Tuesday, October 22, 2013,
Mamaversity has now blossomed from a private coaching experiment between me and our three children to a public life/academic coaching event.

Words can't express how excited and grateful I am about our official launch on last Saturday, October 12th! A special thanks goes out to my fellow coaches, Andrea Works and Yolanda Cameron, as well as to contributors, Dr. Carolyn Clansy Miller and Rhonda Miller-Eaglin. You ladies rock!

The feedback we got from our participating scholars was heartwarming an...

The Spark is Back!

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Friday, September 6, 2013, In : Progress

I know it's only the second week of the school year, but it has definitely been a banner week for our three scholars! They have all demonstrated some remarkable growth and I just couldn't wait to share.

Tyler: 11th Grade
Tyler made a quality decision this week. After receiving less than favorable scores on two evaluative quizzes this week and really assessing the workload, time commitment, and expectations of her AP English class, she decided to switch to AP History instead. Now normally I woul...

School Year 2013-14: Words to Launch By

Posted by Tracy Dennis on Tuesday, August 27, 2013, In : Goals and Planning
This past Sunday evening, or as I like to call it, First Day's Eve, was one of laughter and resolve for us and our three kids. As we do most every year when summer break is over, we sat down and met with them about the start of a brand new school year, our change in routine, expectations, and so forth. Now that our youngest has at least one year of middle school under her belt and our eldest is entering her last two years of high school, I could hear the maturity and self-awareness that is em...

About Me

Tracy Dennis I'm the mother of three of the most delightful kids ever to grace this earth! I know. I'm biased, but that's allowed :) I love learning and I want my kids to love it too - for life! That's why I'm documenting our ups, downs, highs, and lows as we plot a new educational path filled with wonder, relevance, and genuine growth. Hopefully, along the way we'll inspire others to do the same.
